New Poll Asks: Is Miley Cyrus Better Role Model Than Selena Gomez?

Miley Cyrus has long been criticized for what many consider her hyper sexualized dress and demeanor. In fact, the former Hannah Montana star's performances are often unfavorably reviewed because of her sexuality instead of her singing. She is repeatedly vilified as a terrible role model for young women. But is she? Or is Cyrus' open and honest approach to her sexuality and to human sexuality in general healthier and more mature than Selena Gomez' cutesy pie coyness or Taylor Swift's long-suffering lovelorn persona.

Although many people were aghast at 18-year-old adult Miley Cyrus' sexual honesty in her recent Prestige Magazine interview, some members of the media described her stance as "mature and honest." As Miley herself put it:

"Every 18-year-old explores sexuality and experiments and tries things. For me there's no reason to change that. You have to be true to yourself."

That is absolutely true. Furthermore, no one would expect an 18-year-old man to change, repress, or deny his sexuality. Not to mention the fact that Miley, who's been with boyfriend Liam Hemsworth for 2 years lives a life which is, by her own admission, rather tame.

Recently, William Earl at Hollywood Life dared to call Miley Cyrus' sexual honesty "refreshing." And he suggested that she may be a far more suitable role model for teen girls than "pop tarts such as Selena Gomez, 19, or Taylor Swift, 21 [who] are obsessed with fluff lyrics and presenting an infantilized version of women which is not realistic. Life for Taylor and Selena may be all lollipops and rainbows, but Miley is much more inspirational to fans who understand that life is filled with hard choices and experimentation. Miley may not be perfect, but who is?"

Who indeed? And isn't it better that teens learn that life is not a PG rated Disney fantasy so that they can be better prepared for it? Isn't a real flesh and blood role model like Miley Cyrus a more realistic icon for maturing teens than the statically sweet but impossibly perfect Selena Gomez? In other words, is Miley "a better role model than some of her too prim and proper peers?"

Amazingly Hollywood Life put the question to the public with an online poll. The results were even more amazing. In response to the question, Is Miley Cyrus a good role model? a whopping 70.57% of the respondents replied "Yes."

So, take that, Haters. And you go, Miley.

Demi Lovato has a major reason to celebrate Saturday — after a difficult past twelve months that has included personal struggles and media scrutiny, she is now moving forward with her life another year older. The “Skyscraper” singer is now officially 19 years old, and fans are quickly making sure their voices are heard by turning “Happy Birthday Demi” into a Trending Topic on Twitter
In celebration of her big day, Demi posted the following image on her account to get people even more excited about the release of her new album “Unbroken” — which, ironically enough, debuts in exactly one month.
As for what Demi is planning to do, odds are that she is looking forward to celebrating with some of her close friends — which could include Miley Cyrus and Selena Gomez (though the latter definitely won’t be present physically due to her nationwide “We Own the Night” tour). In a recent interview, Demi announced that she still finds plenty of time to see Miley despite that friendship not being in the headlines as much as her bond with Selena:
“I haven’t worked together with her on music. I just spent the night with her the other night, she is really still a good friend of mine we still have fun together but it’s all friendship.”

Three years ago teens teamed up and took sides in the battle of Miley Cyrus vs. Selena Gomez. All it took was bickering over one adolescent heartthrob, Nick Jonas, and two concurrent airing television shows to spark rivalry amongst the two young starlets. In 2008 they were both in their prime, starring in two of Disney’s biggest hits: Hannah Montana and Wizards of Waverly Place. The shows enabled the actresses to become triple threats as they ventured into music and film careers. Who takes the win for 2011?

Miley Ray Cyrus

Was born Destiny Hope Cyrus on November 23, 1992 in Nashville, Tennessee to Tish and country’s one hit wonder, Billy Ray Cyrus. Multitude of smiles as a baby earned her the nickname “smiley” which was later shortened to Miley. She later changed her middle name to Ray in honor of her grandfather who passed away. Although, it was suspected that she changed her middle name to match her famous father. In earlier years, her father took her to see a production of Momma Mia and it was then that she revealed her desire to act. Struggling actress? Her first role was on Doc, her father’s television show.

At age 11, her family caught news of casting for a new Disney Channel television show called Hannah Montana. She originally sent a tape to play the best friend on the show but she was told that she was too young. A year later, producers asked her to come back and audition for the show. She was cast as the main character; however, producers decided to change the premise of the show by changing the main character’s name to Miley and having her biological father, Billy Ray, cast as the father on the show.

Did Miley get the part because of her acting chops or did the producers see an even bigger vision by having Billy Ray and his daughter, Miley, as key characters on the show? Nevertheless, the show became one of the highest-rated series on basic cable. Miley signed an album deal with Disney and put out a double album with the first half catering to her character on Hannah Montana and the second half debuting herself as a solo artist. She went on to make two films: The Hannah Montana Movie and The Last Song. She also released two additional albums. Currently, Miley just finished her Gypsy Heart Tour where she promoted her 2010 album Can’t Be Tamed.

Controversy Timeline

In 2007 she had a photo on her private MySpace page of her and a female friend sharing a piece of licorice. It looked as though they were almost kissing. In 2008 her e-mail account got hacked and photos were released of her in her underwear. Also, in that same year, she was photographed in Vanity Fair by photographer Annie Leibovitz. She was wrapped in a bed sheet which gave the illusion of her being topless. In 2009 she performed Party in the U.S.A. at the Teen Choice Awards where she was criticized for a brief pole dancing routine on stage. In 2010, TMZ released a video of Miley at 18 smoking with friends out of a bong. Miley claimed that she was smoking the psychoactive plant, Salvia Divinorum.

Miley and Selena "Sex And The City." Prequel talks

Both Teen sensations have been in the talks to star in the 'Sex And The City." Prequel. Last year it was said that they would love to have Miley Cyrus play Carrie in the new flick. Now there saying they want Selena to play Charlotte. Both girls expressed excitement about it. Miley said she loved SATC and Miley even had a cameo in the second film. Selena said it would be awesome however shes never watched the show because she was too young at the time. Personally im a huge fan of SATC and i think both girls would fit these roles. Selena in real life is just as shy and humble as Charlotte is in the show/films. Miley is more of a risk taker and has more experience like Carrie does in the show/films. Is Selena Gomez Trying To Be More Like Miley Cyrus?

Selena may not be decked out in bondage gear and taking off her clothes like Miley, but she seems to be following the same music and movie track of her Disney predecessor!

Miley Cyrus has transitioned from Disney star to serious actor and singer in the past few years, making some serious money in the process! The 18-year-old pulled in a whooping $15 million in 2010, and it seems like at least one young star is trying to follow in her super successful footsteps — Selena Gomez!

Selena recently wrapped filming on her hit show, Wizards of Waverly Place, and is now starring in her first major film, Monte Carlo. Much like Miley, after she finished filming Hannah Montana, starred in the well received The Last Song. Worked well for Miley and it looks like it will work for Selena. Miley has since shot LOL: Laughing Out Loud and So Undercover, transitioning from television star to movie star. Selena is no doubt hoping to do exactly the same.
Miley also became more involved in her music career after leaving her show, just like Selena is now doing. Miley’s songs were featured in The Last Song just like Selena’s will be in Monte Carlo. Furthermore, Selena is embarking on a major tour, just like Miley did, in support of her new album.
As for extracurricular activities, Selena hosted the MuchMusic Video Awards in 2011, just like Miley did in 2010.
There are also the high profile relationships which, while in no way planned, hugely help the visibility of these young stars. Selena and boyfriend Justin Bieber are the young Hollywood couple of the moment, much like Miley and beau Liam Hemsworth once were.
Miley did alienate some fans with her more grown up image as she moved away from Hannah Montana, but her success has been undeniable. Therefore, it seems like she would be the perfect person for Selena to emulate as she tries to further her career.

There comes a time when all child stars leave that awkward stage of limbo when they’re still young enough to be marketed towards kids yet old enough to start breaking out into more grownup ventures. And Disney’s three most popular starlets are no exception.
The British version of FHM magazine recently named Selena Gomez(number 76), Demi Lovato(number 54), and Miley Cyrus(number 32) in their 100 Sexiest Women List. All three girls started out in the entertainment industry as fresh-faced teens and have gracefully turned into multi-talented young adults. They’ve all branched out from Disney productions and took on more grown-up ventures like song-writing, fashion designing, and charity work. And now they’re getting recognized for their pretty appearances and trend-setting style.
Its nice to know that Demi, Selena, and Miley are still making waves in the entertainment industry even though they’ve pretty much outgrown the Disney niche and are probably waiting to take the next step in their career. And while this type of recognition from a magazine could land them more grown-up roles, more lucrative projects, and long-lasting music careers, the only major downside to being labelled “sexy” or “hot” is that it could typecast your image and make it harder for you to get the projects or gigs that you really want.

Selena or Miley Mad at Grammy's Digs? E!, No. Duh.

According to Page Six, Selena Gomez was cursing mad backstage [at the Grammy's], complaining to her makeup artist and assistant after her copresenter Donnie Wahlberg intentionally glanced at her while saying Justin Bieber's name. Sources inside tell us that "the glance" certainly wasn't scripted, so did our Disney darling really lose her cool?

"Absolutely not true," a rep for Gomez tells us. "Selena didn't even give it a second thought." If any of you fear that the wholesome Disney star has picked up a few key phrases in Hollywood, Team Gomez disputes the angry report even more. "The story is inaccurate on every level, as her make-up artist and assistant weren't even at the Grammys."

Glad to hear the gal is way to busy being Justin's baby, baby, baby, ohh to worry about petty drama.

But what we really want to know is if  Miley Cyrus kept her cool? No, not because she's jealous of Selena's Bieber Fever, but 'cause after Seth Rogen's pretty hilarious joke about getting high with her backstage, Miles was never seen back in the audience.

Selena Gomez does have a pont. We really don't know what kinds of pressures these Disney stars are under. On top of the normal stresses of being a teenager, every mistake and unflattering moment is out there for the world to scrutinize.

Although Selena Gomez and Demi Lovato no longer seem to be BFF, it's nice to see that they still care about each other.
